Mary Anne Lewis, who has exercised her free speech rights as a Pittsburgh radio talk show host and newscaster, newspaper journalist and university faculty member, reminds us that Independence Day is also a time for gratitude for the right to speak out against injustice. Moreover, she has been contemplating launching her own blog to do exactly what she advocates in this post. We’ll keep you posted on that.

This weekend America marks Independence Day. As we know, it is the anniversary of the day the Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776. Rather than simply looking forward to the fireworks this fourth, take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices other Americans made to insure that you and I don’t live in a country like Iran, where residents are shot in the street for daring to voice opposition to the government.
This is something we can too easily take for granted. Concentrate for a moment on those who have fought and died for the sake of freedom. Beginning with the Revolutionary War, countless Americans have answered the call when necessary to preserve freedom in America.
The next time you see a wrong being committed, take a moment to voice your opposition. The next time you hear something you believe is wrong, take time to correct the speaker. That’s what living in a free society is all about. That’s what the founding fathers did.
